Woeful Wednesday: Paths (where they exist) that a Woeful Wednesday: Paths (where they exist) that are inaccessible for people with mobility challenges. It is dangerous and inconvenient for many people. These ramps all have lips and several are too steep. These prevent a person using a wheelchair or walker getting onto the ramp and can tip them out if they are going down. All are too narrow for two people to use side by side (such as one person supporting another with their walking). Canberra’s infrastructure for getting around without a vehicle needs to be upgraded so that people who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids can move about our city safely and independently. We urgently need a program to make our paths, crossings and streets compliant with anti-discrimination and accessibility laws and standards. 📆 Come along to the Election Forum on Disability, Planning and Transport neighbourhood issues TOMORROW (Thursday) online at 6:30pm. Poignant Letter to the Editor in today’s Canberr Poignant Letter to the Editor in today’s Canberra Times: ‘No environmental benefit ‘Glenn Keys (Letters, April 26) calls for the ACT to introduce digital drivers’ licences, in part to “minimise the environmental impact of traditional licences”. ‘The environmental impact of printing and mailing one small plastic card every five years is minimal and insignificant. The real environmental impacts of a driver’s licence are carbon dioxide emissions, toxic tyre dust, noise, congestion and everything else that comes with our car-centric society. ‘Moving to digital licences is still a good idea for numerous reasons, but let’s not kid ourselves that this is about sustainability.
